Description

Our photo was taken beside the W.I. sign at Langton Fire Department. Our team members are Nikki, Ilene and Nancy Chesterman. Kate Pratten took her 3 children ages 5, 2,and 2 months home after our fun in the snow. (Kate is our fourth team member.)

Tippy Toe Tigers Team Visit Langton

The Tippy Toe Tigers Team of Jean Brumpton W.I. in Tillsonburg journeyed to Langton, Ontario to see how the Langton W.I. have made a difference in their community. On the way there our team plus six family members were able to enjoy toboganning and sleighriding at a golf course. Whee! Started February 21,1934, the Langton W.I. members have accomplished a lot over the last 88 years. Two W.I. Signs on Highway 59 advise travellers entering the village that W.I. is active in the village. Another sign in front of Langton Firehall includes a bench for a rest area.

Some of the things accomplished by Langton W.I. members include catering for the Lions Club meetings, running short courses (some were Care of Clothing, Foods and Nutrition, Meat Cookery, Public Speaking, Leathercraft and Millinery), sponsoring 4-H clubs, a St. John's Ambulance First Aid Course, plays and films, a fashion show, variety night and they have held rummage and bake sales, provided First Aid Kits for local ball teams, donated towards furnishing the teachers room when Langton Public School was built, shared in the purchase of dishes, silverware, coffee makers and carts for the Community Centre, and held euchre parties, W.I. members serve meals during Langton's Fair, and during WW11 knit socks for soldiers. Donations were made toward purchasing a dishwasher and floor for the Community Centre and they purchased cafeteria equipment for the Langton and Area Arena. A bursary is given yearly to a Valley Heights Student and a donation was made to Norfolk Library Board for the Valley Heights Library. They also have supported Brownies, Girl Guides, minor ball and many charities. A Tweedsmuir History of North Walsingham book was assembled and printed in 1977 by Langton W.I. curator, Mrs. Cora (Reginald) Smoke. Langton Women's Institute have endeavoured to carry out the ideals and aims of W.I. through the years.

The people in and near Langton are very lucky to have Langton W.I. contributing to life in their village. We wish them all the best in this Chinese Year of the Tiger and hope they can continue for years to come.
