WINONA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. '. The Winona Women's Institute was organized on June 7th, 1905 by '" MP8~E.D.Sm1tn. v . ' ~ ' The first meeting was held at the home of Mrs. McKay. In 1906 Mrs. R. McKay was President and Mrs. A.B.Foran was Secretary. No records from this time to 1916 are available. Records from 1916 to 1923 show that the ladies were-very active in a number of worth while projects; work was done for the Red Cross, Paardeberg Chapter I.O.D.E, great interest was taken in the 129th Wentworth Battalion, socks were knitted, work was done in a room next -to the Postoffice, fruit was canned for Soldier's flonvelscent.home, field comforts were sent, $2.50 per month was sent to care for a prisoner of War in Germany, clothing was gathered for Belgium children. ' During this time home interests were not forgotten as money was given for prizes for our school children and money was sent for the releif of fire sufferers. In 1919 interest lagged and it was even discussed as to whether the Institute should carry on, it was decided to do so, and we find a donation of $25.00 given to the War Memorial Fund. In' ' In the Financial report giVen May 1916 it reports $125.00 given for Fieldsfiomforts, $64.00 for yarn for socks and knitting machine, as well as money given for a prisoner of war and Belguim releif.. To the Convalescent .Soldiers 2 62 qts fruit and 3 pts. jelly and a quantity of dried apples and peaches. During the period frOm 1929 to 1937 the Institute gradually increased its membership and in 1935 a membership of sixty is recorded. _ In 1929 special attention was given to releif in our own community and needy families were assisted with food and clothing. - Two children at the san were adopted and their needs were cared for. _ A medal was given for school children with high marks. . .The Horticultural Society was started, sponsored by the Women's Institute, in 1929, and it was agreed to assist in putting signs and 1i hts in the little park. . 5In 1932 the matter of a foodfith for school children was brought up and . this path was made, keeping the children from walking on the highway. .S\ I - 11A1________;_______;;;___$gggg:1
