Four Woodland Ladies, wandering through the magical glowing pumpkin patch,
Looking for our perfect pumpkin, they don’t need to match.
Short, skinny, large bumpy and flat ones, laying in the sun,
We, the curious folks, were having lots of fun.
We were planning to do some seasonal art,
A Halloween face on the pumpkin we were to create.
The criteria changed for the selection to a pumpkin from a gourd,
As a few measurements had to be made.
It was like shopping for something we were going to wear,
Because we were putting them on our heads, sorry about the hair.
Patsy thought her head was bigger than most,
But Myrna’s was found to be the deepest.
The test pumpkin that was used, fit Marg’s just right,
Maybe because of Maxine’s hair on her, it was too tight.
We got some special tools to clean out the pumpkin goop,
A mini hacksaw, drywall knife, and an old heavy cast aluminum ice cream scoop.
As we were designing our scary face,
We had to make sure that the openings were in the right place.
Some used a sketch pad with all the features,
And then cut them out and placed the page on the creatures.
Sometimes trial and error were the way to go,
But then we had to figure how to make our faces glow.
The costumes were ready, the stage, featuring Cucurbitaceae members, was set,
Pumpkins, gourds, black crow, bats, spiders, and a web of bale wrap net.
A couple of us had our pumpkin heads on, we were patient and had to wait,
The photographer did not have her cell phone on, so she was late.
A member’s husband, called from milking his cows in the barn,
Took up the new calling to take photos of this fabulous team.
Three of the four witches were cheerful, they thought,
The grumpy one was not because she wanted to stir the pot.
With her carved pumpkin face, the Ghouls and Goblins would be chased away,
Throughout the night her team would not be harmed, no way.
The photo required was a bit tricky to get the view right,
The issue was the light whether it was too dim or too bright.
We dawned our pumpkin heads and witches’ attire, ventured out on All Hallows’ Night,
Visited Women’s Institute (WI) and non-WI members but did not fright.
We gave them a greeting and a treat,
And hoped they enjoyed the festive visit and the surprise they could eat. - Notes
