- Activity # 5 – ‘Fun in the Sun’
Photo:
Beneath the golden Autumn skies bringing about a magical glow, the Sunshine Gals, Linda, Robyn, Jo and mystery lady, dressed in their ‘sunny’ witch hats, share their ‘fun in the sun’ pumpkin creations. Hallowe’en costumes don’t allow for revelation of faces with this photo…only names. Next month we will ‘see’ you.
Our Story:
Witch way to the pumpkin patch?
What did the Sunshine Gals say to their pumpkins? We’re here for a good time.’
The Sunshine Gals all piled into a truck (for fuel efficiency!). Certainly, there’s more fun when we are all together. We travelled to a local pumpkin farm where, amidst the chatter and laughter, each of us searched for the perfect pumpkin. Oh the decisions! Who knew there are white ones, gray/silver ones, yellow ones, pink ones as well as the traditional orange ones! We choose the colour of our own liking and then proceeded to Sunshine Gal Jo’s workplace to ‘carve out the good times!’
Everyone was eager to tackle the pumpkin challenge creating ‘fun in the sun’ with sunny smiles. Some pumpkins carved easier than others. There were a few minutes of ‘quiet’ as each carver concentrated on her creation. But soon the silence was broken with laughter and giggles. ‘Wow! That’s really cold.’ ‘Eew! Yuck.’ ‘How many seeds does yours have?’ ‘What do you get when you drop a pumpkin? A squash.’ ‘What do you get when you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter? Pumpkin Pi.’ ‘What did the pumpkin say to its carver” Cut it out’. And so we did…smiling jack-o-lanterns, happy sun and a sunrise to start the day off right.
Following the labour-intensive workshop, the Gals took a colour tour of our brilliant fall colours as we travelled to Schmidtsville in Wellesley for lunch. Mmmm Good home-cooking. And it always tastes so good when we aren’t cooking it. Overcast skies and a cold drizzle delayed our photo op. No fear. Indian summer did return with escalating temperatures to enhance our witches and their ‘fun in the sun’ pumpkins. This opportunity was indeed filled with laughter.
While relaxing over a cold glass of fresh apple cider, the Gals recalled some memories of their Hallowe’ens past. Costumes were never bought from a store. You made your own costumes with whatever you had on hand. Treats were homemade. Some recalled dressing up for a Hallowe’en party at school. ‘What about visiting on Hallowe’en night?’ Most never went to town, knocking door to door. Out in the country, rural area, we might visit immediate neighbours. One of our Gals mentioned walking north on Huron St., Woodstock, across the Thames River. Huron St travelling north over the river??? We learned that the Pittock Dam was started in 1964 and completed in 1967 which only allowed entry into Woodstock from the north via Devonshire Street, as we know it today. ‘Wow. That’s 55 years ago! Where does the time go!’
OH MY GOURD! The Sunshine Gals have had a smashing good time chasing away the Ghouls & Goblins.
