- Scavenger Hunt # 4 Story
The Mighty Four Lobo Lassies met at McDonald's Restaurant in Strathroy on Tuesday, September 20 at 2 pm. Our South Lobo President, Rie Van Steeg, a member of our team was designated to pay for the person's beverage behind her in line and who was not a member. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts with ladies that were not willing to play, Rie approached a gentleman who was eager and willing to play.
Doug Tweddle accepted the Women's Institute bookmark and was willing to be part of our province wide scavenger hunt. Rie then paid for his coffee. Doug Tweddle, who now lives in Strathroy but was a farmer from the Kerwood area who worked in the agricultural industry and knew the husband of a team member as he was also a farmer. He also was acquainted with other team members and their husbands. As he had lives in the Kerwood area where there was a very active Women's Institute branch for over 100 years, he was well aware of the Women's Institute. We shared with him some of the latest Women's Institute projects. Human Trafficking is in our area and branch members have helped to make people aware of what is happening and how to identify people that may be unwillingly involved. Doug was made aware of what Women's Institute is doing with project "Maple Leaf" to combat this crime. We also mentioned Lyme Disease, a growing health crisis in Canada and how FWIO has urged the government to create measures so that the disease can be diagnosed in Canada. It was explained that we are raising money for research at the University of Guelph and are holding R.O.S.E. programs to educate the public of signs of the disease and how to prevent people from being bitten by Ticks. Rie gave Doug a copy of many of the Resolutions that have been passed over the years. He was not aware of what the Women's Institute has done to make this a better place for everyone. Doug was really impressed with what the Women's Institute has done. The team members had a really good time with Doug Tweddle as we all knew a lot of the same people.
Going forward, Doug Tweddle will share his bookmark with his wife whom he said might be interested in being part of our branch. She is a very community minded person as she helps at their church where they prepare and serve over 100 meals once a week to homeless and needy people. They also have the "clothesline" that gives less fortunate people access to good second hand clothes.
The Might Four Lassies had a great day, talking to local people at McDonald's in Strathroy. This act of kindness paying for one man's beverage opened up a real friendship with people that we knew but hadn't seen for years and hopefully we may gain a new member for our South Lobo Women's Institute branch.
