Description
This clue sounded simple, but really wasn't.
Our PEWI branch members were hesitant to approach a complete stranger, unsure of what the reaction might be, so we considered our options.
Narrow the field to increase the chance of success and reduce risk: approach someone already known to be of stable mental health and active in the community at the local Tavistock Fall Fair. The idea was to treat them to a coffee at the booth traditionally operated by a local church, in the arena where there would be tables set up to allow for a conversation. Not possible, since the church group gave up the booth!
OK, then what?? Stay calm and narrow the field even more to focus on someone known to us who happens to come to the September meeting. Ah-ha! We did have a guest, Pauline Alexander, daughter of our member Opal Kwasnick. That was the random bit within our parameters.
We did present her with a token bottle of water and asked her if she would agree to take part. Yes, she accepted the bookmark and we shared a highlight: our most recent branch display (From Farm to Table) at the Tavistock Fall Fair which included a small In memoriam for Queen Elizabeth. This was a nod to her inspiration as our branch formed 75 years ago, five years before her title changed from Princess to Queen.
Pauline was happy to hear of our support for the local fair.
She was unknown to two of the WISH participants so they made a new friend in the process. We are hoping this activity might encourage her to consider becoming a member. Time will tell.
We are an adaptable bunch and hope we didn't stretch the boundaries too far, but felt this was a reasonable compromise. Our own branch members were quite curious to see what might be involved in the WISH clues.
In the end we had our group photo taken with Pauline holding the bookmark and then, we carried on.
