- Description
- Cafe 23 is a sweet little bistro located on the main east/west street of Stirling, Ontario. Carol, the owner cooks lunch in a tiny corner, while serving customers and training her new hire. This is the kind of small business that is the backbone of our country. The Springwell Sisters chose this location to fulfill the fourth scavenger clue, agreeing on how important it is to support local businesses.
As leader of our group, I introduced myself (wearing my Women’s Institute badge) to Carol to explain our proposal to greet a customer and pay for her drink. Carol was interested in what I presented to her, asking where our branch is located and some of our activities.
We did not have long to wait until Christine entered the eatery with her husband. I waited politely for a good moment to acquaint myself to her. Christine was mystified and listened intently as I explained about the scavenger hunt contest. I explained how Springbrook-Wellman’s Women’s Institute does local charity work, as well as participates at the provincial and international level, through the ACWW. Christine mentioned some familiarity with Women’s Institute, as a relative of hers was once a member. She accepted the bookmark and paid drink, happy to support our efforts.
The Springwell Sisters were pleased with our efforts and spent a pleasant afternoon over our own drinks. I made sure to honour our pledge to Christine to pay for her drink. - Notes
