Description
It was a hot, sunny day in August 2022 when 4 Tec-We-Gwill Women’s Institute team members, Gladys, Bonnie, Barbara and Michelle, were hanging around the Tim Horton’s in Cookstown peering into the windows of all the cars that pulled into the parking lot.
Is that a woman…no…there…no, she’s going through the drive-through. Finally, we followed a family of 5 into the Doughnut shop, a man, a woman, an older woman, still younger looking, and 2 younger children. Were we stalkers? No, we were doing the Wish #4 challenge to find a lady at our local coffee shop or local location and present her with a bookmark showcasing Women’s Institute.
Gladys approached them first and we had a wonderful conversation. They were a family from Britain, travelling with Grandma, to see the sights of Ontario. We talked about Women’s Institute, the Queen, and her branch of WI. Yes, they’d heard about WI and thought they did a wonderful job.
Their orders came through and they left. We still had our bookmark to give away since we wanted to find a local lady.
We stood outside chatting while we drank our cool drinks. 3 wearing masks and 1 not since 2 of us, Bonnie and Michelle, were supposed to become grandmas that week. Bonnie received a beautiful baby boy grandbaby the next day, number 9! Michelle had to wait another week for her beautiful grandson. Her first!
Finally! A lady appeared, picked up an order, and came out the door. We pounced…No, we did the neighbourly thing and just started chatting, mentioning Women’s Institute and a preserving workshop the branch was running at the end of August. Gladys gave her one of the Tec We Gwill WI business cards and the bookmark and she was on her way. She may come out to a meeting right away, but WI now has some brand recognition. Not to mention we were all on a high – meeting with friends, drinking sugary or caffeinated drinks and feeling elated!
