THEME: ON SOLID ROCK
Rocks are found in the earth's crust, a part of the core or foundation on which more layers are formed, creating a strong base. When we see rocks or stones, most people just walk on by. But if you stop to pick up a rock and look at it, you will see so much more. Crystals that sparkle, and lines or markings that tell of a history. Rocks come in all colours and shapes and sizes. Rocks are also much like the foundation of friendships. When you see a person and don't look closely, you barely notice them. But if you look closely and take the time to get to know them, you will see the same sparkle and lines or markings that also tell their story or history. Just as rocks are a part of the earth's foundation, so do they symbolize the solid foundations on which friendships are built. A good solid friendship is like a rock, strong enough to withstand the earthquakes that may come into our lives, while also displaying the true beauty that will sparkle and shine. We can put some paint on the rock to create our own beautiful markings that will only add to the natural beauty that already exists. Giving a beautiful rock to a special friend shows them that you value their friendship, both for it's strength and it's beauty.

The rocks we picked came from the foundation of Brenda Bunker's barn, which was about 125 years old, but was taken down as it was no longer being used. The foundation was still strong, having been built by early pioneers. We chose these rocks as they symbolize strength and character.

Ria Stewart--I chose to give my rock to Margaret McMahon, a fellow Howick WI member. She is a very dedicated and seasoned WI member, and long-time Secretary of our branch. She has lots of wisdom and advice which has been much appreciated by me as I stepped into the role of President. The rock will be a reminder to her that she represents the brightness and beauty of the sun, and the strength of the rock.

Linda Stewart--My stone is going to my sister, Nancy Baxter. She is the special person in my life. We laugh, we cry, and we get into trouble together. I hope she likes my artistic attempt.

Brenda Bunker--I am going to hide my rock for Ronna Lee Johnson, a very involved, friendly WI member. Friends are the sunshine of life. We can enjoy every sunset and look forward to every sunrise for the inspiration of a new day.

Marg Greig--Nature's scenery takes our breath away with all it's colours and variety. My stone goes to Pauline Atton, whose roots are from England. Her input and ideas add to making our Branch's foundation varied and stronger.
