A Line and an Arm – what’s the connection?

Creation Name: Road Safety
Women’s Institute has been involved in many things over the past 125 years. Some are just a bit surprising when you look back.
The white lines on roads seem so innocuous now, but when you think back roads have evolved tremendously to keep up with the vehicles of today.
Going through my family’s “things”, I came across a postcard dated 1934. A family member drove from Leamington to Windsor in southwestern Ontario – a 56 km drive on today’s road that now takes approximately 52 min. The note on the postcard says “We left Leamington about 3 o’clock this morning. Arrived without an accident.” How harrowing was driving then!!
Although inconspicuous, the white line, especially at night, helps enormously in staying on the road. It helps you at turns especially so that you don’t unintentionally end up on the shoulder or God forbid in the ditch!
We as drivers are indebted to the ladies who took this on and made it happen.

School bus arms. A simple design, yet has probably helped save many lives. Even today, the horror stories of drivers ignoring all the school bus safety devices. But the arm, helps the school bus drivers who tend to do this job out of the kindness of their hearts.
To think of any accidents that happened prior to the arms being part of the design of the buses. Such a simple thing to make sure that everyone gets home safe and sound.

As we delve into the advocacy that WI across Canada has accomplished over the years, it encourages those today to help forge ahead on what more we can do as technology and lifestyles evolve over time.
To the next 125 years.
