The Winsome Wanderers had a fun afternoon playing with Lego while discussing the role of Women’s Institute. We also reminisced about times when our children played with this Lego (and how much more creative and adept children are finding and putting pieces together). One of our team members, who was sick that day, joined us via zoom with her contributions.
Women’s Institute was founded in 1897 by Adelaide Hunter Hoodless with Erland and Janet Lee, in Stoney Creek, Ontario. The main purpose was to teach women to enhance their domestic and childcare skills, health knowledge, and to improve their family lives and their communities. WI’s purpose has evolved over the years and it continues to place importance on education, although in a much broader sense. Learning often happens at meetings. Each Branch’s activities throughout the past 125 years have reflected the members’ interests and the needs of their communities.
Our Lego display depicts a WI meeting taking place outdoors with several women seated around the table, although most meetings are not this formal. Good food is often a part of WI gatherings and the 'ladies' at this meeting are eager to partake of all the wonderful pies (disguised as pizza) on the table. Fellowship and learning is also very important to WI members. Activities at meetings can include listening to inspirational and informative speakers about a wide range of topics, learning crafts, playing games, community oriented projects, planning events, and sharing ideas to increase membership.
Preservation of history and advocacy of social justice issues are also important elements in the WI. Women’s Institute is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2022 --- a very significant milestone in the history of the organization! The WI ‘meeting’ is where it all begins and ‘a goodly thing it is to meet in friendship’s circle bright’. 1
