Who’s on Your Squad?

New to Paris, Ontario, and to the Women’s Institute, we, Pamela, Lynne and Sandy, are grateful to the women of WI who warmly welcomed us onto their squad. The squad has also embraced our non-WI team member, Michelle, who is impressed by the sense of community this unique group offers. We created our Lego squad to represent the cheerleader in all of us. We call it “Who’s on Your Squad?”

Our branch attracts caring, generous and community-minded women, not only from Paris but the surrounding areas, such as Brantford, Ayr, and Burford. We are city-turned-small town gals; we are Paris-born-and-raised; we are rural folk; we are career women; we are farmers; we are retired; we have young families. We are different but we are the same. We are women interested in supporting and being supported by other women and giving back to the community that offers us so much.

We are each other's biggest cheerleader. We generously share our ideas, skills, our abundance with each other and our community. We know that we are blessed with the friendship, and encouragement of the women we meet and want to share our good fortune. It could be Elaine or Laura teaching us baking skills. Or maybe it is Michelle teaching us to plant vegetables from seedlings or how to create winter planters. It might be Erika holding soap-making classes. It is all of us donating monthly to a local charity. Our support shows up in our community with our annual craft and ambassador sponsorship at the Paris Fair. And so many more examples…

Did someone ask if we have fun? Our squad certainly knows how to have fun! We love to celebrate each other, our milestones, community events, Mondays.

Laughter and friendship filled Sandy’s kitchen as we reflected on our good fortune in finding our squad. We brainstormed our Lego creation and laughed. We built Lego cheerleaders in our own likeness and laughed. But when we tried to build the cheerleading formation, there may have been a bit of swearing (and laughing), lots of determination and encouragement. A true team effort!

We help to make our community and each other better. When and if we fall, we know that someone will be there to help us up. Thank you, Women’s Institute. And Go Team!
