Oxford District WI Oxford District ROSE Coordinator, Joyce Hill, jumped on an idea from the Canadian Quilters Association, who wanted to make 1,000 quilts for Ronald McDonald Houses across the country as their Canada 150 project. Each 12 ½ inch log cabin-style slab (block) required one piece of Canada 150 fabric incorporated into the construction. The Oxford District (Southern Area) ROSE committee organized two workshops - one in March 2017 when participants brought their sewing-machines and learned to sew these quilt blocks, and the second in August 2017, an old-fashioned quilting bee where experienced quilters instructed beginners on the fine art of hand-quilting. Between the workshops, the blocks completed as a result of the March class were sewn into 16 quilt tops. After the second workshop, volunteers sewed the bindings on the edges of the quilts - now ready to donate. These workshops provided a wonderful opportunity for WI and community members to share in fellowship, learning and fun while working together on a very worthwhile project. On October 5, 2017, seven Oxford District WI Members, representing the ROSE committee and the many volunteers who attended the workshops and worked on the quilts, proudly presented the 16 colourful children's quilts to Ronald McDonald House in London. Hill View WI Micheline MacRae has been a Member of the Hill View WI (Prescott District, Eastern Area) since 1969. She is presently the Branch Secretary. In 2015, she began making blankets for Alzheimer patients. By November 2017, she has completed 72 plus an additional 8 for autistic children. A local nursing home has requested some of these blankets and they will be given as Christmas gifts. Micheline has spent many hours at her work which she says is rewarding and appreciated by the local community. She proudly indicates that they are made by a Member of the Hill View WI.
