TWEEDSMUIR UPDATE By Tweedsmuir Coordinator, Christine Reaburn Don't Miss the Annual General Meeting! Summer events featured something for everyone! This year's Step Back in Time event on June 25th was paired with the Strawberry Social. Visitors were invited to come onto the grounds of the Erland Lee (Museum) Home and enjoy a variety of heritage themed activities and demonstrations. They also had the opportunity to go into the Carriage House for some delicious strawberry shortcake. Much effort was taken to reach local elementary schools and encourage families to attend the event this year, which paid off. There were many glowing reviews from those who attended the occasion, expressing their enjoyment of the activities available to them. There was a blacksmith on site, making cedar shingles with the initials of guests burned into them, several woodworkers demonstrating their craft, a display of household artifacts, and a children's activity area with heritage crafts as well as a miniature horse. It is the hope that this event will continue to grow in the future and attract more community members to visit and enjoy the Museum. The second annual Psychic and Wellness Fair held at the Museum on July 16th was a great success. The event brought in not only twice as many vendors and demonstrators as last year, including readers, natural skin-care, and tai chi, but also twice as many visitors. The penny sale held that day was a huge draw for community members as they had the chance to win gift baskets and certificates from each of the vendors. Several of the demonstrators expressed their appreciation for being able to be a part of the event, likening it to a retreat due to the beautiful country scenery. Many of those who attended the event also told volunteers how much they enjoyed their time at the Museum and were looking forward to next year. All in all, the event was a wonderful fundraiser for the Museum and we couldn't have asked for a better day! Museum Happenings I have really enjoyed receiving the Branch and District Annual Reports. As of the end of July, I have received 52 Branch reports and 23 District reports. These reports include lots of very interesting information on events, celebrations and happenings from across the province. If you haven't sent your Branch or District report, I am still accepting them. This is my last article for the Home & Country ROSE Garden as my term as Provincial Tweedsmuir Coordinator expires at this year's Provincial Annual General Meeting. This has been a most interesting experience and one which I would encourage you to consider. My thanks to all of you who have contacted me over the last three years. The information contained in the Annual Reports is invaluable in recording the diligence in which Members and Coordinators have researched, collected and recorded the history of their communities. The prospect of having the Tweedsmuir volumes digitized has sparked imaginations and renewed interest in the collection. Information has been coming to light on volumes from long disbanded Branches and gaps in the records have narrowed. We have also been hearing from Archives who hold some of these valuable books. I believe that the Tweedsmuir volumes are the 'Jewel in the Crown' of Women's Institute and will, in the coming years, be an extremely valuable resource for researchers.
