- The Lane Cemetery (1797—present) is located on the north side on Lot 12, Concession V1 at 4528 Twenty Mile Road (Regional Road 69), east of Saint Anns, Ontario, in the Township of West Lincoln. It is named after the Lane family who were early settlers and the historical owners of the property. The cemetery originated as a family graveyard; the first person to be buried there was Hannah Lane (1737—1797), wife of Jonathan Lane (1735—1807). In subsequent years other pioneering families from the area were interred there in addition to the Lanes, their relatives, neighbours, and friends.
This private cemetery occupies three steep hillsides with a driveway curving around the central knoll. Additional land was donated by Chester Lane to extend the western section. It remains open for select burials to this day (February 27, 2022).
Our treasure, The Memorial Gates, are located on each side of the western entrance (the main driveway) to the Lane Cemetery. **See photos 1 & 2 attached. The gates were commissioned by the Rosedene Women’s Institute to mark their 50th anniversary (1909 –1959) and were dedicated “in memory of The Pioneers” of the district. This landmark is tangible evidence of the efforts of the Rosedene W.I.
Many Lane women were long-standing active members of the Rosedene W.I. from its beginning in 1909 to its end in 2007 (98 years) including Eliza Lane, Etta Lane, Mrs. Richard Lane, and Kim Lane, to name a few.
The milestones reached by the Rosedene branch were considered important family and community events—baking, quilting, garden parties, picnics, suppers, annual bazaar, and so on. The funds raised were distributed to the institutions near and dear to their hearts: Memorial Gates (Lane Cemetery), WLMH, Silverdale Hall, Smithville Train Station, The Pelham Panther’s, etc. As well, they supported safety issues that eventually became law such as marking yellow lines on roads and removing phosphates from laundry detergents.
