- Description
- In 1927, the Women’s Institute of Colpoy’s Bay erected the hall that still stands to this day. Not only does it stand, but in recent years it has enjoyed a renaissance that has seen renovations to make it more accessible and a renewed and vibrant membership that keeps it busy with concerts, various sales, and other community events. Although the village of Colpoy’s Bay has a smaller population than it did when it was a bustling fishing village, rest assured there is a contingent of active and dedicated women keeping the traditions of this hall alive.
In these pictures, 21st century women are pictured in the very same locations as their WI predecessors: in the hall having tea and out on the front steps. These are the same steps where one can see women and children gathered in the book For Home and Country (p.90) almost 100 years ago. Inside the hall are plaques and photos that commemorate the accomplishments of these women and those that followed in their footsteps.
The Colpoy’s Bay Belles honoured the memory of their predecessors by being photographed with these women in mind, occupying the places where they once gathered. As they approach the centenary of the hall, many continue to work hard to bring the arts, education, and social reform to this beautiful building and the friends and neighbours who continue to assemble there.
The Belles of the Bay are: Tara Stanton (WI Member), Ana Ratcliffe (WI Member), Suzanne Shearer and Elizabeth Burrows. - Notes
