- In a quest to find a WI Plaque or Hall in our area, one of our team members travelled out one day to the Kenmore Community Hall where the Kenmore WI held their meetings and maintained the hall for a number of years. After tramping through the snow around the building she could not find any reference to the Kenmore WI. Inquiries by another member to find out if there was a plaque inside also came up empty. The next location to check was a little park outside of Vernon that the Vernon WI had a hand in setting up. After tramping through more snow, a plaque was not to be found. We then contacted a Vernon WI member who has access to the Vernon Community Centre where the Vernon WI holds their meetings in the Daisy Robinson Room. A plaque is hanging in this room to celebrate the Vernon WI's 80th Anniversary on September 8th 1992. The plaque was presented to the Vernon Women's Institute by Osgoode Township Mayor Albert Bouwers to commemorate the occasion.
The plaque was found, but the Vernon Community Centre was not open to the public. The Osgoode Township Museum, also located in Vernon, allowed us into their building to do some research on the Kenmore WI and let us bring the plaque there so we could get a group photo. Thanks to the Executive Director who took the picture for us.
The 80th Anniversary of the Vernon Women's Institute had members from Greely, Manotick Station, Kars, Kenmore, Leitrim, Metcalfe, Ramsayville, Winchester and Vernon in attendance. Currently only two branches are still running, Kars and Vernon. Additionally, special guests included the Eastern Area President, District President and Osgoode Mayor Albert Bouwers.
Entertainment for the evening included a musical trio, a skit, a history of the Vernon WI and readings from old minute books and a fashion show with the theme "The right way and the wrong way to dress for occasions".
To round out the evening coffee, sandwiches and an anniversary cake were served. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening and the Vernon Tweedsmuir Histories were on display.
It was interesting to find out some of the history of the Vernon WI and that it is now in its 110th year. - Notes
