- We are sending a big hello from Fairfield Branch.
Our entry includes 2 of the 3 options asked for in the activity section of the Scavenger hunt instructions.
We have come to the conclusion that the reason that it was so difficult to find Women's Institute specific buildings or plaques, is that our group of community minded women just quietly go about giving to their communities without recognition.
However, we have persevered! After unsuccessfully trying to connect with many and varied organizations, hours of online searches, Covid restriction difficulties and researching local historical publications/historical books, fate stepped in.
Fast forward to a snowy Family Day in Kingston at a local coffee shop. Four lovely, approachable ladies were imbibing of the convivial beverage, minding their own business, when they were approached by a masked, forward stranger. The kindred spirits of W.I. must have been whispering. What would make us pick that particular table? In particular, Joyce Gordon from the Joyceville branch of W.I. was of immense assistance. She directed us to the Barriefield Park not 10 minutes away. After telling us that she was sure that everything would be buried under the snow and that she wasn't sure where in the park she had seen a plaque and a monument of some sort, away we went. By chance we found buried under the ice and snow, a stone birdbath, which was dedicated to the park in 1997. Next to the birdbath is a plaque stating " Stone birdbath donated by Pittsburgh Township Women's Institute (a social group of rural women with groups throughout rural Ontario) to celebrate 100 year anniversary 1897-1997 of Women's Institutes in rural Ontario."
We four hardy Canadian women have managed to enjoy each others company and accomplish our goal, while we (and all the teams) battled snowstorms and Covid.
Respectfully and cheerfully submitted by
