- SPRINGFORD COMMUNITY HALL
In January 1986, the Springford Women’s Institute decided their old Institute hall was not in satisfactory condition and asked council for help to renovate the hall. They refused on the grounds that spending
money on an old building was not feasible and they were refused.
The community decided at this time to build a new hall. As the only incorporated group within the community, the Institute was able to apply for the Wintario grants. In the fall of 1986 the Women’s Institute applied to Wintario and were refused. In the spring of 1987 the Institute reapplied to Wintario and this time they were successful.
The Women’s Institute had declared their intention of closing their hall at the end of June 1986, but were persuaded to keep it open until the prospect of a new hall being built. The old hall was closed at the end of February 1988. The old hall was sold to an Amish neighbour. His payment was he had to tear down the old building and leave the lot level.
In September of 1987, township council transferred ownership of land for the new hall to the Springford Women’s Institute. In November of 1987 the contract to build was awarded, the hall was built and the community have a hall to be very proud of. - Notes
