W.I.S.H. Scavenger Hunt Clue #1
In 1867 Canada became a country uniting 4 provinces together as The Dominion of Canada. 150 years later in 2017 our branch of W.I. celebrated Confederation Day by having a flag pole erected outside the Windermere Community Hall where we hold our W.I. meetings. The flag pole has the cord running up the inside of the pole so it doesn’t make a clanging noise in the wind. Buried beside the new flag pole lays a time capsule put together by members of our W.I. branch in collaboration with some members of the community. The time capsule holds letters from our local elementary school children, a few small popular toys like fidgets, an election brochure, a Lion’s Vest, hasty notes of sketches of local buildings, a penny (discontinued in 2012) with a note of its history, a TV remote controller and other miscellaneous items.

The location of the time capsule has been registered with the township and is slated to be opened after 50 years. Just think how different things were 50 years ago! Just think how much will have changed in another 50 years! Who knows how many of our time capsule items will be obsolete in 50 years!

Our team discussed various options of plaques or projects we’d like to photograph for this first scavenger hunt clue as there have been many over the years. There was a plaque for the first W.I. meeting place, quilts, cookbooks, hasty notes, a brochure guide to an historical walk throughout the community, projects advocated by our group such as signs posted asking drivers to slow down for school children and a street light installed at a major turn from the highway to make it safer for cars at night. We selected the flag pole and time capsule project because it involved the community, the flag represents our patriotism and the time capsule will hopefully be educational and of interest to the community in 2067. Perhaps some of the elementary students who wrote letters will be present for the retrieval of the capsule and will take a walk down memory lane. Perhaps some will remember the ladies of the Women’s Institute and will become our future members. Perhaps some will become Interested, Involved and Inspired WI members!
