- Description
- Howick Women's Institute members have a beautiful display case at the Howick Community Centre, a project undertaken to commemorate former WI branches that have disbanded, including Fordwich, Gorrie, Lakelet and Howick Junior Women's Institutes.
The idea for the display case came after finding memorobilia from Fordwich WI when cleaning the Fordwich Hall before it closed. Howick WI had already received many articles from family members of disbanded branches, and wanted a way to safely preserve and display them. The idea of a display case to be put in the Howick Community Centre became a project to mark the 40th anniversary of Howick WI in 2018.
The display case was beautifully built by Tim Bunker (Queen's Bush Construction), husband of Howick WI member Brenda Bunker. Today the display case proudly preserves and displays treasured articles from former WI branches. Many people have stopped to look at the display case and reflect on family members who once belonged to these WI branches.
Howick WI continues to be an important part of Howick Township, eagerly embracing the future while also being proud of preserving some of the past.
In the photo are Howick WI members Ria Stewart, Brenda Bunker, and Marg Greig. - Notes
