‘Twas Saturday, May 21, 1921 a lovely, spring day when the Godfrey WI hosted the FIRST FRONTENAC DISTRICT ANNUAL, a picnic on a grassy peninsula on Howe Lake, just north of Verona.
In 1978, this “spot”, commemorating the gathering, was denoted by the Godfrey WI with the erection of a large blue and gold plaque. Years passed, trees grew, new ones were planted, the railway bed became the K&P Trail, new houses sprung up and the plaque post became entangled in grape vines, and wild raspberries.
In the spring of 2004, three ambitious ladies from the Godfrey WI tackled a clean-up of the historical plaque site. Here, we pick up the scavenger quest. The Tweedsmuir record photo shows these three industrious ladies at work.
Where exactly was the plaque, and was it still standing? This was the question that Team Unflappable Four set out to answer on the WISH. Through a local history buff we learned that it perhaps was near the Picadilly Hall where the Godfrey WI had held their meetings. No such luck, but we learned that one of the three ladies in the photo was still living in the local Godfrey area.
Yes, she remembered the plaque clean-up, and within minutes readily set out to verify its existence. Within twenty minutes she excitedly reported it was still standing proudly, although now very inconspicuous to passer-bys. Furthermore, our history enthusiast, now eagerly involved, dashed out to verify and reported back within the hour. ‘Yes, it’s right there standing tall!’ she beamed.
The Unflappable Four had stirred up enthusiasm to their WISH challenge.
Could such excitement, contentment and pride have endured for 100 years? The Unflappable Four can answer this. Yes, it can!
The Godfrey WI was founded in 1916. It disbanded in 2004. Its members’ legacy of admirable contributions to Home and Country will not be forgotten.
