f Vii-CA l _ CANADA PACKERS Known since the hO's as Canada Packers plant for processing Mary and poultry Products the large brick building on Dunn Street on the north east section of' town was the first Public School, until the building south on River bank was built in 1898. It is now unoccupied and fate uncertain} During World War I, Percy C. Wilkins used it as a Knitting Mill for socks. -It was then used, 1msueeess1om as a Creamery toy a Mr. McCash and Fred Fowler who later moved down to the rear section of the old Bank of' Montreal building on southhwest corner of' Mill I " and Main Streets. The business later came under management of the "Four Way" operators of Tara, milk products. Then UDPC (United Dairy & Poultry Co-op) and three years ago the business was moved down to Mill Street East where George Bryant is Manager with a staff of up to nine including two drivers. Gay Lea Is the brand name of' the products. An interesting note - l The "Four Way," name came from combining of the P. Cutter Creamery in Paisley, M. Players in Tara, Carl Marklevitz in Chesley and w. S. "Scoup" McKenzie of' Port Elgin. i i
