T he Erland Lee home, located at Stoney Creek, Ontario, was built in various stagesfom 1801-1873; a well preserved example of Gothic architecture. The outside of the house is covered with board and batten ( upright boards, joins covered with battens). The gables are decorated with maple verge boards carved from home-grown lumber by a 14 year-old carpenter,) apprentice whose pattern resembles a paper chain of maple leaves. In 1975, Wf's 75th anniversary, Federated Women's Institute of Ontario purchased the Lee homestead which has since been operated as the Erland Lee (Museum) Home. Both Pioneer and Victorian Eras are represented. He was one of the charter members and served through the years as secretary-trea""- er and president of the Farmer's Institute of South Wentworth, formed in 1884. Because of this involvement, Erland Lee was present at an agricultural conference at Guelph in 1896 where Adelaide Headless gave a stirring speech regarding the subject of women and education in the area of domestic sciences. So impressed with her ideas, Erland Lee invited Adelaide Headless to address the annual Ladies Night meeting. To ensure a good turnout, Erland and his wife Janet, rode by horse and cutter personally inviting women from every class and distinction. The result was that on February If), 1897, 101 women and one man (Erland Lee) were pre- sent to hear Adelaide Headless speak. Bland Lee presided as chairperson over that meet- ing when it was motioned that a Women's Department of Domestic Economy in affili- ation with the Farmer's Institute be orga- nized. Erland Lee, the youngest of three children, was born on May 3, 1864. He obtained a second class teaching certificate from Hamilton Collegiate Institute and a second class certificate for agriculture from Agriculture and Arts Association of Ontario. When he inherited the family farm, he continued the family traditions of raising purebred Jersey cattle, specializing in fancy dairy butter. He was a progressive farmer and businessman who produced his own brand of maple syrup and grew several types of fruit which were sold to ED.
