HISTORY OF THE CHURCHES IN DWAR'S COMMUNITY . 1) METHODIST CHURCH The first church in the community was a Methodist church built on a corner of the farm of the late Donald Dewar who gave the land free of charge and with no condition attached. For this reason it became known as "Dewars" from 1864 onward. C In 1881 a new Presbyterian Church was built and the present structure is ' used by the Dewar s Orange Lodge. i f 2) BAPTIST CHURCH It is situated at the cross roads of the llth Line and the County Highway from Lochwinnoch to Braeside and Arnprior and right opposite the present Orange hall. This church was built in 1888 on the corner of property belonging to the late Archibald Stevenson. For many years services were held with a regular preacher the year around. ; Its numbers decreased as many joined with the Pentecostal religion. Then ? they could only support students during their summer vacations. Finally that . ' ended. In the granting of the land there was a ruling that if there came a time for . the length of two years when no services of any kind were held the property as well as the church were to revert to the Stevenson's property. : This happened and the building was considered of little service to the ? community as a church. It now belongs to Stanley Stevenson and is a storing . shed since the 1970's. k 5 3) DFWAR!'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - ' The records of the Dewar's Presbyterian congregation date back to 187838 when they were under the Castleford session and met in the school which was 200 yds. west of the present church. This school was destroyed by fire in 1881. In 1881 the present church was built and continued with Castleford until 1904 at the end of Hugh Taylor's ministry when Methodists worshipped with ' Presbyterians. Then they joined Braeside and Sand Point with Rev. Wm. Moore ' in 1908. He was followed by Rev. J.S. Dobbin and then in May 1911 the Rev. James Taylor became the minister and remained until church union in 1925 | when Braeside and Sand Point united. Dewars did not. They then joined the i Lochwinnoch and Stewartville charges . ! ' Mr. D. Kerr was appointed student minister and served from 1926 to 1934 . ' During his term the church was remodelled, a basement being put under it in 1927. In 1934 Walter Campbell served as a student minister and was followed ; . by Stanley Glenn. Rev. T.S. Hutton served from 1936 to 1940. In 1940 ; Dewar's joined with Arnprior, the minister at the time being Rev. H.P. i Maitland. Rev. Alexander Mills was minister in 1944., In 1951 Rev. Owen * Channon was the minister. Rev. Dr. St. Clair--Jeans was minister in 1954 .
