President Jim -Butter presided and welcomed all and Rev. Herbert Herring returned Grace. Following E delicious dinner served by the Ladies Legion Auxiliary, the toast to the ladies was proposed by John Heleniak and responded to by Mrs. Robert Scott. President Jim Butler im troduced the head table guests, John Pocrnic, Mrs. Muriel Bishop, Mrs. Edna Dale, John Heleniak, Miss: Mary Cabaj, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Butler, Judy Savoy, the guest speaker, w. and Mrs. D'Aree Corless. Mr. and Mrs. William Waring and Mr. and Mrs: Lame Parker. Also introduced were Mr. and Mrs. Neil MacPherson, who were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary. Certificates of Merit were presented to Aft. and Mrs. William Waring and Mr. John Pocrnic. In presenting the Award to Mr. mders. Waring, Lorne Parker stated Mr. Waring was bom- in: England and came to Norwich 71 years ago. As a young, boy, he at- tended Barber College in United States and worked as a barber in Stratford for fimyears, prior to returning to Nina-wich where he was empioyedas a barber by Lou Walters for 13 years. In 1924 he married Gladys Hamnmnd of Neg; Durham and in 1939 purehaseda barber shop, pool room, tobacco shop and lunch counter which be operated with me help of his wife until selling the business in 1948 when he became a general insurance agent Mrs. Waring took a course and grew and sold flowers from ttieirihome for ten years, until both retired in 1967. They have one daughter, Mrs. Ted Vaughan, CAudrey) of Brantford who was present and introduced with her husband, three grandchildren Mrs. Gordon (Shirley), Surgeoner of Guelph, Gary rd, Whitby and Larry of Brantford; also one great-grandson, Aaron. Mr. Waring is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and Mrs. Waring a meniberof the U.C.W. and Women's Institute. Both are members of the aiited Church and former members of the Eastern Star, In replying Mr. Waring stated "tonight shall aNays be a part of our good days in; Norwich. We would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for the honor bestowed on us and we shall always remember your kind- ness and wish the Chamber of Norwich continued success. Mr. Pocrnic was addressed by Mr. Butler who stated he was proud to present the Award of Merit. He was born in Yugoslavia, where he was' married irr1923, and came to Canada in 1926, working at Sudbury, farming in the Vienna area and Straffordville. Prior to moving to Norwich where he purchased a pool room and tobacco shop. He had the respect of the boys who called him "Pop." Mr. Poernie sold his business several years ago and moved to his present home on Stover St. N. Mr. and Mrs. Poernie had two sons: Dr. John Pocrnic who passed away in 1968 and Mike who resides in London. He has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of" London. Mrs. Pocrinic passed away about six weeks ago. Two grandsons were present, Dante and Steve, and in- troduced. On behalf of his grandfather, Dante thanked the Chamber for the honor bestowed on him. D'Aree Corless, past president of the Chamber, in- troduced the guest speaker, Judy Savoy, C.F.P.L. channel 10 weather girl, who spoke on her life and work. Miss Savoy stated she was born in New Brunswick and as a child had aspirations to be an actress. At the age of . 17 she attended college in Montreal and later went to Toronto and attended Ryerson Radio and TV taking an Arts course, Miss Savoy appeared in a movie, worked in a Crown Attorney's office, went to Theatre school and toured with a theatre company prior to going to London. Finding positions hard to find and always thinking she could do anything, she finally got started doing commercials, auditioned for a position as a weather girl in C.F.P.L. and took a crash course in meteorolgy, and now appears for 21/2 minutes during the weekends broadcasting the weather. There are no cue cards and you are only given an hour to memorize the report of the weather. _ She stated I. am first a person, an individual and then a girl, I enjoy being a woman on a team, working with the guys' and ad libbing here and there. 1 like to do public broadcasting, travel and meet people. _ Miss Sa\'roy- was thanked by Lavern Irving who wished her well in her work. The next meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be March 6 at the Anglican Church when Chief ,of Police Robert Knight will be the guest speaker.
