&# LORPD and LaDy THEEDSMUIR Ladv Tweedsmuir,the former Susan Charlotte Grosvenor,was the dau&hter of the Iate Honourable Norman Crosvenor and is a descendant from a sister of the Dukesof Wellington. Hoer Excellency was closely identified with and keenly interested in ‘ thecWomam"s Institute movement in England. She was a president of Elsfield W.I .amd occunied the nosition of Countyv President of Oxfordshire Federation previous to Lord d Tweedsmuir‘s appointment as His Majestey‘s Representative to Canada. She was Honourary President of the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario. In one of heâ€"er addresses she warned institute members of the dangers of superficiality and overâ€" organization which is a danger of modern life which seems to be apt to our age as well. She said that we do so many things there is a danger of gettina a smattering of everything. "Avoid the supidityv of quarreling among ourselves,red tape,and the making of too many rules. 1t hink we have a great future. We are a steadying influence because we have our roots in theP?kour minds and hands working im the present and our eves looking cIéerIy into the future." Her Excellency was a possessâ€" or of no mean literary talent and manvy of her publications which include plays, children‘s books,and reminiscences, will be read with interest by W.l.members . Lady Tweedsmuir took a special interest in the provision of libraries for rural areas of Canada and she encouraged Women‘s Institutes to compile and publish historâ€" ies of focal communities and villages. This vast colection of local histories will serve as a memorial to both Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir. Following the death of her husband she returned to England. John Buchan was born August 26,1875 in Perth,Scotland,the son of Rev.and Mrs. John Buchan. He was educated at Glasgow and Oxford Universities and in 1901 was | called to the bar. For many years John Buchan was a partner and adviser to the 3 publishing house of Thomas Nelson and Sons. From 1927 to 1935 he was a member of i the British House of Commons for the Scottish Universities. Inâ€" 1935,John Buchan f . was commissioned to be Governor General of Canada. There was some surprise in aranting the commission to a commoner as it had aIwavslbeen held by those of royal blood. But he wos shortlv afterwards made the first Raron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield | and that settfed that. As Covernor CGeneral,he worked for Canadian unity and helped establish a national consciousness. Lord Tweedsmuir was a great traveller who visited all parts of Canada including the Far North.
