Sweetman, Eso., Clerkâ€"Treasurer, Township of Scugog, R.R.NOo. 3, Port Perry, Ontario. - Replying to your letter of the 19th instant, I beg to advise that the first dam at Lindsay (then Purdy‘s Mills) on the Scugog River was built in 1830 by Messrs Purdy, who had mills at that place, and who had an agreement with the government of Upper Canada for water privileges. The dam was situated some distance above the present site. | In 1843 the government of the Province of Canada entered into an agreement with Messrs Purdy, the old dam was removed and a new one erected on a site further down stream. According to a report by G.F.Baillarge, Chief Engineer of the Board of Works, dated February 6, 1866, this second dam was completed in 1844. In 1867 the works at Lindsay were taken over by the Federal Government, as noted in the annual report for the Departgent of Public Yorks for that year. In 1909 a new concrete dam was built by the Department of Railways and Canals on the site of the old one, the contractors being John â€"Ritchie & Company, of Beamsville, Ontario. ' .
