Description
This Cenotaph to honour World War 1 soldiers "who paid the supreme sacrifice" was erected in 1920. It is located on the south side of County Road 25 at the southeast corner of Spring and Norway Streets east of the main Castleton ”downtown” intersection of County Roads 21 and 25.

Listed alphabetically under “Killed in Action” are:
Private Ed. S. Cochrane Sept, 16 1916;
Private G.L. Chatterson Nov. 7 1917;
Private Geo. Dixon June 2 1916;
Private H.H. Farrow Jan. 10, 1918
Private Earl S. Moore May 8 1917;
Private Ed. M. Onydon April 9 1917;
Private Robert Pomeroy Sept. 18, 1916;
Private Ernest Powell Aug. 28 1918;
Private Arthur Peters April 29 1915;
Private F.C. Richards June 2 1916.

Under “Died of Wounds”, are the names:
Corporal Raymond J. Brown May 18 1917;
Private L.T. Godwin April 18 1917;
Private Walter Morgan Sept. 15 1917;
Private Wm. Claud Peters March 15 1917;
GP Clayton Pomeroy Nov 1 1916;
Private Roy. E. Graham March 15 1916.

The Castleton Women’s Institute (W.I.) was the fund-raiser and driving force for this memorial. There were plays, teas and many other community events organized by the W.I. The words “Erected by the Municipality Cramahe and Castleton W.I.” are engraved on the front.
