Box 1102 ; Montreal, Quebec H3C 2X9 / . & j t Dear Sir: | As a shareholder of The Royal Bank I wish to propose 4 Mrs. Sarah Lavalley to be recommended to The Selection Committee | for The Royal Bank Award 1982, Dr. John T. Miles joins me in this proposal. In less than two years the 87 year old Mrs. Lavalley has been honoured with three major awards. In June 1980 she received | The Good Citizenship Award from The Province of Ontario, and in the fall of 1981 she was the recipient of The Order of Canada ' Award at Covernment House in Ottawa. On January 12, 1982 she was { presented with the highest Papal Honour ever given to women. | ' Sarah Lavalley is an Algonkian Indian of the Golden Lake, Ontario band. These honours recognize her long standing contributions to family and church life, through her personal involvement to the community of which she is a part and reaching beyond, promoting harmony between Native people and those o% other ethnic and nonâ€"Indian communities near by, as well as across the nation. Mrs. Lavalley, the former Sarah Partridge, ‘ has seven children and numerous grand children. She has acted as midâ€"wife and counsellor to her own people and community. Sarah has participated with honour in the supervision of the cooking of game during Royal visits. ! While speaking to Mrs. Lavalley recently I asked her what | was the one great thing that won her all these awards. Her answer, in her typical modesty was "I didn‘t do anything, I Just t did what had to be done." These words left an impact on me and 8 I strongly recommend The Royal Bank Award for this unassuming H Great Canadian Indian Woman whose life is an example to all. | | | e 12 ax 4 â€"â€"7 Mrs. Lavalley does not know of this proposal but I will | tell her and hope you give it the highest consideration. | | Dr. Miles, a Torovto Vascular Surgeon knows Mrs. Lavalley well { and is well acquainted with her social contributions and f achievements, and readily joins me in making this proposal. | | | | We look forward to hearing from you soon. | | { | ' | ghor oo 31 * ia ; s en df oi arnt+ booscudify | Sincerely, j /A VA aall * e mn 4od1?4/ ghetes | I .
