Country" was issued by the F.W.1.0. to all Branch members. Donations were made to the "Institute for the Blind." In May, 1939, plans were made to celebrate Sydenham W.I.‘s 20th. birthday. Mention was made of the first regular meeting held June 25th., 1919, on Mrs. Lacey‘s lawnm. The celebration was to be a Children‘s Picnic at Lake Ontario Park on July Ath., 1939. . Rosedale, Spaffordton and Sydenham Public Schools were all invited. Besides private cars Mr. Stoness and Mr. Martin loaned trucks. 85 children attended and enjoyed the swings, slides and other amusements at the Park. A big lunch with Birthday cake with candles, drinks and ice cream was provided. A glove making course was given at the Dairy School, Kingston. A garden party was held. Plans were discussed about entering a play in the Drama Club contest. October, 1939 saw the beginning of the Public Speaking contests which are still so popular. At first this was sponsored by the Local Council of Women at Kingston Fair. Three contestants from Sydenham Public School entered and two won awards. work was done on the cemetary fence and then it was painted. Jams and jellies were donated for Christmas Cheer boxes. War work, under the Red Cross, began in October, 1939. $200 plus acerued interest (total $237.49), which had been set aside to purchase a Community Hall was voted back into the regular current account. Mr. H. Stoness, reeve, spoke of phases of Relief Work, saying there were 131 registered on relief, all entitled to medical care. Eight large boxes of Christmas Cheer were distributed. Mrs,. 0. J. Lindsay and Mrs. C. H. Maybee were appointed representatives from Sydenham W.I,. on Local Red Cross executive during war time. The Sick Children‘s Hospital, Toronto, was supported by donations. Dr. Sargeant was paid to . conduct a Toxoid Clinic in the Public School. Money was sent for Chinese Relief fund. hm
