MAKELA, KUSTAA â€" [ 0. Svensk remembers â€" R.S.] Jalmar Wuorio roomed at our place in Toronto. He was Kustaa‘s full brother, but he had a different surname. (Hilja Maki corroborates this, and says that it was Wuorio who had changed his name). He sent money so Kustaa could come from Finland. So Kustaa came and he roomed at our place for a little while. I guess it was Father who suggested to him that he should come to Louise Townâ€" ship. There was land to be had next to us along the river,. It was the fall of 1913 that Kustas and his family came. They had no buildâ€" ings on their claim. They lived that winter in a cabin on Lot 4, concession V. ’ It had been built by Heesi, but no one was living in it at the time. In the spring they moved across to their land and got a cabin built. They had no horses and not much in the way of equipment. They had two big heavy grubâ€"hoes. I think they used them to plant their first crop of potatoes.
