CARMAN CEMETERY As was so often the case in the days of early settlement, the cemetery was started as a private burying grounds in 1855. Mr. Peter H. Maybee who lived on the farm where Mr. Willaim Rome lives at the present time 1979, buried their young daughter Susanne in one corner of his field and put up a maker in her memory, which is still standing and still readable. Several more of the same family are buried there. In 1865 an indenture was drawn up between Peter H. Maybee and seven trustees named from the church Bd and in this indenture Peter Maybee gave these men "one quarter acre of land for the sole purpose of a public burying ground" and they were the trustees to administer to these facts. In 1878 a parcel of land, east of the old burying ground, and south the Orange Hall lot was purchased from . Peter Maybee for the sum of $30.00. Then in April 1899 a further parcel of land east of the Orange Hall lot was purchased for $28.00 from John M. Maybee, who was a son of Peter H. Maybee and who was living on his father‘s farm, to enlarge on the burying ground. For a few years the cemetery seemed to fall in a sad state of disrepair, but in 1948 the men of the Church and community went into action and with several bees, erecting new fencing, planting shrubs, etc. and the cemetery became a place of pride and is still kept trim and tidy with a regular caretaker. In 1964 when the school was closed, part of the school grounds were pruchased to further enlarge the cemetery. In 1967, Mr. & Mrs. P.D. Stewart presented new gates to the cemetery as a centennial project, which enhance the cemetery grounds.
