East Northumberland District WI 60th Anniversary Celebration Held "1961" The EBast Northumberland District Institute marked 60 years of achievement at a gala occasion held in Warkworth Town Hall last Wednesday afternoon, October 25. Decorations featuring the WI colors of royal blue and gold provided an atiractive setting for the occasion. Mrs, Gordon Carr of R. R. 1, Vernonville, presided over the meeting which opened with the ode and creed. Mrs. Bryce Hazelwood of R. R. 2, Codâ€" rington provided the piano accompaniment for the open‘ng exercises. w Mrs, John Whitehousg gi. 8. K. 8, Brighton, district secretary, read @ a letter from Mrs. James Haggarty, president of the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Canada, expressing her regrets at not being able to attend. Mrs. Haggarty, sent greetings from the F. W. I. C. and best wishes for future success. Congratulations and best wishes were also received from Peterborough District Women‘s Institute and from Mrs. Robson, president of the Trent Valley area. A ladies quartettse from the Codrington Branch sang the Hymn of All Nations. & feature of the meeting was the presence of a number of past district presidents who commented on highlights during their terms of office. Mrs. T. M. Gresham of Colborne (1960â€"61) spoke of the introduction of the foster child plan and the second scholarship in the making. Mrs. Arthur Nemeilley of Warkworth (1958â€"59) attended the national convention at Ottawa during her term. Mrs. Clayton Taylor of Brighton (1952â€"53) spoke of the convention of the Associated Country Women of the World at Maple Leaf Gardens, which she had the privilege of attending. During the term of Mrs. Fred Deryes of Brighton (1938â€"39) the Seymour West Branch had celebrated its 25th anniversary. Mrs. Denyes is a member of the provincial hboard. Mrs. Robert MeCullock (1927â€"28) recalled the silver anniversary of the district held at the home of Mrs. Esli Terill, Wooler. Her sister, Mrs. Reg. McCulloch, now deceased, was president in 1950â€"51 when the district celebrated its golden anniversary. Mrs, McCulloch also recalled that the Belleville area had been formed during her term of office. v Other past presidents in attendance included Mrs,. George MeCubbin (1948â€"49) of Warkworth, Mrs. Jesse Locke (19%6â€"47), Mrs., Charles Wolfraim of Campbellford (1943â€"45), Mrs. Floyd Harnden (1931-35) and Mrs. Leigh Isaac of Warkworth (1929â€"30. Past district secretaries present included Mrs. James Black of Campbellford and Mrs, F. Warner. Corsages were presented to all past officers and honored guests. A memorial service for 16 deceased district presidents and secretaries was conducted by the Wooler Branch under the direction of Mrs. Ervon Sceott. Flowers were placed in memory of each by a member of the branch to which they had belonged. Two minutes silence, followed by the Lord‘s Prayer, and a solo, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere by Mrs. J. MacCallum of Wooler concluded the impressive service. . Mrs, Maurice Bulman and Mrs. Chris Dallison of the Community Branch, : 'ï¬ Hilton, played a piano duet. Grestings were presented to the district by Mrs. Marion Smith, home economist for Northumberland; Mrs. Digweed, provincial board member; Mrs. G‘llespie and Mrs. George Burkitt, past provincial board members; Mrs. S. Foster, provincial board member for Hastings and Prince Edward Counties; Mrs, Allan Linton, president of Northumberland West; Ralph Banbury, agricultural representative for Northumberland, and Mrs. W. W. Farley, the forst district president,.
