HISTORY OF COMMUNITY WOMEN‘S INSTITUTE The first meeting of the Women‘s Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Norman Chatten on Thursday, January 20th, 1944. The meeting opened with the Insititute Ode followed by repeating the Lord‘s Prayer. Mrs. H. Jaques, President of Codrington Institute then took charge of the meeting for the Election of Officers. There were 12 members who paid a fee of . 25¢ and became the Charter Members. Namely: Mrs. Norman Chatten Mrs. Fred Wade Mrs. Fred Thorne Mrs. Roy Morrow Mrs. Roscoe Morrow Mrs. Russell Herrington Mrs. Douglas Morrow Mrs. Lyle Chatten Ars. A. Griffith Mrs. John Cooney Mrs. Gordon Thorne Mrs. Lorne McDonald Mrs. Kenneth Tett There were 5 visitors also present. At the February meeting it was moved by Mrs. Fred Wade and seconded by Mrs. Fred Thorne that the Branch be named Community Women‘s Institute. Mrs. Fred Thorne was appointed as the first District Director. At the May meeting a motion was passed to levy a fine of 2¢ on the members failing to answer the Roll Call. "Modern Dressmaking" was the first Short Course to be taken. At the July meeting wool was distributed among the members to knit socks for boy overseas. On August 4th a picnic was held at Little Lake with 30 attending. At the September meeting the following were appointed: Convener of Agriculture â€" Mrs. Roy Morrow Convenor of Citizenship â€" Mrs. C. Taylor Convenor of Historical Research â€" Mrs. Doug. Mutton Convenor of Social Welfare â€" Mrs. Maurice Herrington Publicity â€" Mrs. Fred Thorne In October an invitation was accepted from Lakeview (now Ridge Road) Branch to combine with them at a Victory Loan Rally to be held a Dundonald Hall on Nov. 2nd and be prepared to provide 3 mumbers for the program. It was suggested that the School children be instructed to ask for Pennies for Milk for Britain when out on Hollowe‘en. Hilton School collected $3.20 and Wade‘s Corners $1.70. Mrs. C. Taylor and Mrs. Bernard Morgan were the first delegated to be appointed to attend the Area Convention. In December a hot supper and social evening for members and their families was held with 35 present. Collection was $9.60. . Nine boxes were packed for overseas. Several euchres and dances were held during the year to raise money. 1945 â€" 1946 President â€" Mrs. Fred Thorne Sec‘y Treas â€" Mrs. B. Morgan Baby garments were made for Layettes for Britain. Used clothing sent to Europe. $2.00 prize donated to Brighton Fair for best assortment of not more than 10 sandwicheds, Sponsored 4H Club with Mrs. J.C. Miller as Leader and Mrs. Lorne McDonald assistant. Donated and served lunch at Blood Donors Clinic. A Committee was appointed to collect material for Lady Tweedsmuir History. Members also started preparing a Cook Book. Assisted with a Banquet for the Returned Soldiers.
