«imunty rallies behind church Page 3 of 4 Locally, a petition has been posted at Colborne Home Hardware, requesting a public review of the bishop‘s decision and asking that the doors of the church be reâ€"opened to parishioners in the interim. The Grants, who own the hardware business, are among many families in the community which have deep ties with the church. One of Doug‘s ancestors served as minister. The list of families which connect to the church is like a spider‘s web. Writer Jane Urquhart now makes her home in Colborne. She and her brother John Carter who recently retired from his law practice in Colborne remember their parents‘ commitment to the church. Jane is a member of the Friends group and has spent her life promoting and preserving our heritage. Enid Rogers is no longer with us but in her will she left a sizeable fund for the church to use as needed. The most sizable portion of the "Enid Rogers Fund" went into the building of the "new" rectory in the mid nineties as her wishes stated in her will. The fund is part of a nest egg of close to $40,000 held by the diocese but available only to the local church. f * I | ages S | The Friends of Trinity have looked at the church‘s finances and believe that the church is indeed solvent, and can continue to be solvent well into the future â€"â€" notions apparently rejected by Bp. Nicholls in a recent Northumberlandtoday article. She is quoted in the April 13 article as saying that the primary reason for the closing of the doors at Trinity after 166 years is financial â€"â€" "not being able to meet financial obligations". Using the accounting methods applied to the church budget and to negotiations the church has had with its sister church in Grafton, the church has been and continues to be capable of supporting itself. It is only when arbitrary increased proposed expenses are inserted by the bishop that the church goes into deficit in its 2012 budget. Currently the church is debt free aside from approximately $14,000 which it has committed to pay to the diocese. The debt was incurred when Trinity played Good Samaritan to tenants in the rectory. http://www.cramaheâ€"now.com/index.php?view=article&catid=1 :latestâ€"news&id=2769:c0... _ 6/13/2012
