DQUCw LANDRETH lllllllIIIIllIlllllIIlllllllllllIIlllIllllilIIIIlIIlIlIlIIuIIIlI A St. Marys elementary school 'teacher was specially honoured last week for . his accom- plishments on the baseball field. Doug Landreth, who has taught at North Ward School (now Arthur Meighen School)' for the last three years, had his No. 15 uniform retired by the Stratford Hillers on July 10. Landreth, 35, pitched 17 seasons in the In- ter-County Major Baseball League. His 198 ap- pearances from 1967 to 1983 is the Inter-Coun- ty career record. He ranks second in a num- ber of career pitching categories, including most innings (1071), most wins (73) and most strikeouts (914). . His career record is 73 wins and 53 losses with an earned run average of 3.99. In a feature article in the Stratford Beacon Herald last Tuesday, team manager Dennis Schooley, a teammate of Landreth's for more than a dozen seasons, said Landreth was a key figure in Stratford's league cham- pionships in 1974, '76, '77 and '80 and their Ontario Elimination Tournament victory in 1981. "Pd say Doug is the most important Stratford Hiller ever," Schooley said. "There's no other team that's won five championships in the past 10 years and the biggest single reason is Doug Landreth. "He's always been the mainstay of the pitching staff. There was a number of years when we went with two or even just one import pitcher, and Doug. And he's a good team man. He had a great knowledge of the hitters around the league and could always help the other pitchers with physical problems or pick up little nuisances in their technique." Landreth taught at South Perth Centennial School for four years before joining the staff at North Ward. He teaches rotary History to Grades 7 and 8, English and a gifted studen- ts class. Landreth lives in Harrington with his wife Louise, daughters Jocelyn, 6, and Shannon, 2, and four-year-old son Gavin. ...........................u.nnunun-munuummnunInnunmulunnnuIunumIm1ImulllllllllllHIllllIllIIIIllllIIlllnllllmInumllllmmmn" mm
