#2177. On July 15, I999, the Hillier Women's Institute gathered in the new carriage house at Macaulay House in Picton for their meeting. Marylin Rennie opened the meeting with the usual Ode, and Mary Stewart Collect. As promised Marylin re- searched the story of the Women's Institute logo and explained how the crest and logo came to be. Peggy and Elwood Burris will cele- brate their 40». wedding anniversary on Sunday August 29‘" at the Hillier Town Hall and the members oinllier W.I. were asked to join them in celebration. The meeting was adjourned at noon so that our hostess Marjorie Darling could in« troduce our six guests from Amherst Island Women‘s Institute who came to join us for lunch, have a tour of Macaulay House, visit the museum and Bird House City. One of the things pointed out I’m sure to any‘ one who was nearby, was the tombstone in the cemeâ€" tery that is inscribed (died 31“ day of February). When everyone was seated at tables we proceeded with our roll call “An Interesting Historical Fact about our Respective Communities". Everyone had some wonderâ€" ful story about their life in the County. So much knowledge was forthcoming from renovating and re- searching century homes by new settlers and older set- tlers to the interesting his- tory and stories told about the older settlers and their families, their rolls in farmâ€" ing, industry, and generally making the county success- ful then as now. Pat VanK- regten our Tweedsmuir Historian, read past and present articles from the Tweedsmuir book and dis- played the new book cover hand made by Scott Brown and hand painted by Peggy Burris. Our guests ï¬om Amherst Island W.I. also told stories about their be- ginnings and roots on the Island. Lunch was catered by Friends of Macaulay House. The day was beautiï¬il as a day in July should be and the tables and food set up just as beautiful. Hot casse- roles, salads and wow! Hot biscuits! Then we could talk about blueberry custard tarts for dessert. Many thanks for the Friends of Macaulay House for this perfectly re- laxing lunch. After such a wonderï¬il lunch we were certainly ready for a tour of this grand home, exquisitely fumished with antiques dating about 1850. We were split into groups to tour the house and then at our leisure we could walk over to the museum, walk in the gar- dens, walk to Bird House City and just have some more relaxing time. In July 1999, Melissa Coghlan passed away afler a long ï¬ght with leukemia and Hillier W.I. members and families wish to extend their sincere sympathy to her grandparents Victor and Violet Coghlan and to her extended family. Vi is a long time member of the Hillier W.I. Many people who have just moved into the County may I-Iillieriwf I. enjoys lunch with Amherst Island W.
