We can recong' what is essential and worthwhile and What IS worthless and dangerous. k Our British parliamentary system and out100 on life has evolved over many centuries. There were many trials and errors in that long road to the DPBSEM. but today, although it. is: constantly in danger, we have a system of government and way of life that is potentially the best in the world. . What purpose does the Queen serve? She is the chief of state, the official head of our government. She is always there, impartial, above politics. She is the living symbol of all the uI‘chill ways. They must address the Speaker. .They, must speak in reasonably polite language. They must not fight when they disagree. They must abide by time-tested rules. The idea that a man's home is his castle which must not be entered by the police or any official without permission or proper authorization, the idea that a person accused of a crime is presumed'innocent until proven guilty. the idea that there should be fair play and respect for the rights of others. these and many others are the ideas and practices which by law and tradition guarantee our free way of life. As soon as some of the traditional rules or symbols are removed, the whole system is in danger. Change Canada into a republic. Elect a president (and hope that you don’t get a Richard Nixon). No matter who is elected, half of the people probably will not like him. He will have his own pet projects, likes and dislikes. He will be right in the middle of political fights that can get rather dirty at times. Once the first change' has been made, the next is easy. The Germans found this out. Once an unscrupulous man, Adolf Hitler, became Chancellor and then President he put the opposition in prison or shot them. A man's house was no longer his castle; police came when they wished, arrested people and imprisoned them. Our rights and privileges, which are part of the system, should not be endangered by unwise tampering with the system. The Queen is also head of the Commonwealth, a free association of nations - nations which try to help each other and even other nations outside the family. This Commonwealth is a natural outgrowth of the old British Empire. It has evolved as have other British institutions. It is not perfect; yet the ideal is good - a family 0f nations - cooperating, not fighting, and it has been moderately successful. There has never been any organization to compare with it- Let US support it and do whatever we can to keep it alive and improving. In this the 25th year of the Queen’s reign, let us honor her. for she. through her graciousness and devotion to duty, has upheld the position of the crown. the very centre of our system. and has given sympathetic leadership as head of the Commonwealth.
