BEN GILL STREET IN 1907 FROM DOXSEE'S CORNER TO HIGHWAY 11+ 9 3 BY EMILY MOORE Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reed, son George and daughter Jennie. Miss Ruby Christie was schoolteacher in 1909 and later became Mrs. George Reed. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gilbert, son Morden and wife Mattie and family Fred and Ruth. Ruth is now Mrs. Howard Anderson. The Gilberts were the first to build a modern all steel barn. This was built in the 1900's just before World War I. Sanford Gorsline the carpenter lived in Bethel which was the Bowerman home. Mrs. and Mrs. Mordem, Gilberts parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Foster lived on the Charlie Carter farm at the time. Clayton Carter's farm was Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pearsall and daughter Gladys. Mrs. Pearsall was formerly Hannah Doxsee. Our home "The Broadbridges" was the Bidwell DoxSee farm. Mr. and Mrs. Abner Vandusen and family, Roy, Thelma, Ralph and Maizie, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob vandusen and family Nellie, Eugene and Vera where Roy Brooks now lives, Vera in her later years became a lawyer. The farm where Roy Brooks lives , was in the Vandusen family until Ethel Brooks bought it. I think in 1942. Mrs. Vandusen married Albert Cook for her second husband. Next the Scott farm Mr. and Mrs. Alexander SOOtt. son ClaytOn and grandson Walter. Walter went to school when I did, he enlisted and was killed in World War I. Clayton Scott and wife Hilda were married in 1910, had five children, Abbie. Carman, Clare and twins, Fréd and Floyd. They moved to Picton in 1942. Next came Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hunt, daughters Mabel and Myrtle. Mr. and Mrs. Stan McQuaid. Clifford and Frances. Later years Oscoe Maines who married Myrtle Hunt bought the McQuaid farm and barn belonging to the Kerr farm and remodelled it. The house burned in the early 1940's, he then lived in Ethel Brooks tenant house for a time, then moving the Joe Haight house from Jericho to the McQuaid farm, living there until he sold to Mr. Herman Ebbers. After the death of Mrs. Hunt he moved there and resided there until he passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Channel and family in the cheese factory house. Mr. Channel was the cheesemaker. The cheese factory season was from April or May lst until December at that time. Most families churned butter for their own use packing it in crooks during the winter. Back in the lane where Ebbers go to their barn was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Powers Kerr and boys, Don, Lorne and Lyle. Mrs. Kerr (Mabel) was and elder daughter of Jacob vandusen whose house burned and they moved to Picton in the mid 1900's. Where Herman Ebbers Jr. lives was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howe, he drove a steam engine (roller) on the road when the county road was built through the Big Swamp to what is now Highway 14 in years 1909 - 1911. Fred Cole also drove a steam roller and also did the blasting 1n the pit on the swamp hill. He and his family lived on Keenan's farm, a brother of Albre Cole~
