{D GILBEBTS MILLS STREET Gilberts Mills street runs east from Highway No. 14 to the Picton road and consists of lots sixty and fiftyâ€"three in the second concession west of Green Point in Sophiasburg. The only farms still owned and operated by the original owners are the Adam Curtis Doxsee farm at Doxsee‘s Corners and the Alexander Scott farm. The Doxsee farm for which they hold a Crown deed is still owned and operated by Curtis Doxsee and his son Leland Curtis Doxsee, grandson and great- grandson of the original owner. The Church at Doxsee Corners had always been called Doxsee Church and was built in 1871. The school house which is across the road and the lots were bought from Peter Saunders, who owned the land at that time. The school was built in 1879. The Scott farm is still owned and occupied by a grandson of Alexander Scott, Carmen Scott. Gilberts Mills street was a very busy place on hundred years ago when John DZ Gilbert operated a big saw mill on lot fifty-nine on the bank of the creek water power failed. A little farther west Caleb Norton ran a wagon shop, making wagons, ox carts, ox yokes, sleighs and any kind of vehicle then in use by the settlers. Just west of the wagon shop the McHenrys ran a cooper shop, butter bowls, cadles, churns, making barrels, wash tubs and any other wooden utensils then in use, they also made hand split shingles. In 1872, John Benson built what was then an up-toâ€"date Cheese Factory which began operation on June 1, 1872 wuth H. McCurney as cheesemaker. At first it was very hphill work getting enough milk to keep the factory running. It was then called the Benson Factory and was running under private ownership for twenty~seven years during which time the buSiness improved a great deal. Then in 1899, Mr. J.G° Wright, B. J. Gilbert, M.B. Noxon, A.Eu Calnan and Richard Pine aPplied for a certificate to form a Jointâ€"StOck Company. This certificate was granted and duly signed before 3.0. Curry. Justice of the Peace. on the 20th day of March. A.A. 1899. The Corporate name of the Association to be the Ben Gill Cheese and Butter Association. This company bought the factbry, then in use and have remodelled and improved it from time to time and today Ben Gill is one of the most upâ€"toâ€" date, best equipped and best run cheese factories in the county. «7.;
