By Bhowani Harbans Staff reporter Residents of Tyendinaga Township and their friends got into the spirit of the Bicentennial with a big bash which started just after noon on Saturday and ended more than 12 hours later. Highlight of the day was a parade ' which kicked off the rest of the activiâ€" ties. - , _ “Melrose could fit in the parking lot 1; of Napanee District Secondary ' School,” said a woman Saturday at ' Sills Drug Store, Napanee, a few hours after the parade ended. “But the Bicentennial parade was so long, it stretched all the way from the township garage to the ball park.” e woman was of course express- Home ‘ life ' taxi Melrose Mini Mart displayed what home life was like after work for early United Empire Loyalists. Their float was just one of many in the Tyendinaga Summer Day parade at Melrose on Saturday. Tyendinaga holdsbiggest be ing her amazement that a small comâ€" munity could have put on such a great, big parade. She remarked it was about 11/2 miles long. That the people of Tyendinaga turned out in large numbers to make the activities an overwhelming success was no surprise. At least, the organizâ€" ers were expecting that. And they had good reason for doing so. The last time the community saw such grand celebrations was 17 years ago during Canada’s Centennial. The parade got underway from the township garage at about 12:30 pm. it. featured all the usual participants r' e sees in parades in these parts: fl0<.CS, antique displays and cars, clowns and horses. When the parade was finished, a ball game got underway at Melrose. The cakes which were decorated with Bicentennial themes were on display at the township hall. The Tweedsmuir display was in the basement of Melrose United Church as was the pottery display. The township Bicentennial commitâ€" tee operated a shuttle service, so to speak, to transport people from the, township garage to the ball park.
