We got beat out by Waterdown 4 - 3 in the Final game. I was very proud oF those boys and so was the Thurlow Community. In I968, grass roots started to grow. We also entered a Bantam team coached by the late Harry Hodgson and Wayne DeMille. They worked very hard and also went ahead. The First year they won the Eastern Ontario Cup and advanced to the Semi-Finals. I stayed with the PeeWee’s and Carmen DaFoe started to help me again. We now had two ball Fields - Foxboro and Harmony School. In I969, l970, l97l Carmel put the name on the cups again. .Ball games got bigger, crowds more interested and things started to Fall together. Jerry Mann GHd Garnie Adams did an excellent job in l97l by going to the Semi-Finals against Hagersville. |97l was the biggest year I had coaching. Bev Foster sponsored the Pee Wee team that year. We went to the All Ontario Championship against a team named Wheatley. This team wasn’t as strong as the team I had in I967 but what ever I asked they did and we Fooled a lot 0F teams. Team members were: Carman DaFoe Coach Terry Holgate Pitcher Lance Vader Score Keeper Bruce McDonell Pitcher Bill Arthurs Short Stop Ted Foster lst Base Rod DaFoe 2nd Base Jerry Masterson Coach Farley Vader Catcher (Most Valuable Player) Brian Masterson Fielder David Andrews 3rd Base Bradley Sullivan Centre Field Randy Adams Fielder Tony Lattone Fielder Carman DaFoe and I thought this was nicest bunch oF boys we ever worked with or ever will. AFter all the work we had in ball we never regret the time we spent. We had two ball players From this group attend Pittsburgh Traifing Camp by Special Invitation From a Pittsburgh Scout (Jim Frail). Now Forgetting about baseball, one year I coached three hockey tems in Belleville. (Tyke, Bantam and PeeWee) I met Al Waterson and we decided to coach a 0.M.H.A. Hockey Team From Thurlow. We had a lot 0F Fun but beat bad, not enough ice time etc. As Far as I am concerned, this lit the Fuse towards a Recreation Committee to raise money. Diane Genereaux and I had hounded council to start a Recreation Committee. Finally All Waterson attended a Council meeting and pointed out all the money, and travelling etc. Finally, Council called a meeting and around 75 peOple attended. When Council took interest, people did. A committee was Formed that night. Continued ........
