Sa/tf/m' District Jiffy/1 School lé'aml The band is o prodUct of Instrumental Music Program being taught in ' class instruction by Mr. Hauslander and as an optional subject accredited to their academic standing. Band rehearsals are held twice weekly and constitute an extra- curricular activity. The band, through its participation in musical competition, has won the Hamilton Competition on three occasions and in the Toronto Kiwanis Festival they won two 2nd place awards. As late as May 9, 1962, compet-- ing against nine other bands, they again won the Kiwanis Shield with a mark of 92; the highest mark attained in the past ten years. In the past three years they have travelled throughout Eastern Canada and the State of New York, U.S.A. They have been asked by the Lions ClUb 0" Canada '0 represent them at the Lions International Convention in Flordia in June of 1963. Forty miles to the south-east is the great cataract of Niagara Falls. Forty miles to the north-east is the provincial capital of Toronto. During the war of ISIQ-IA the American army was defeated at Stoney Creek. It was June 6, 18l3, that a maiar battle of the war was fought here, and the tide of the American invasion of Upper Canada turned. A monument was erected on the Battlefield area, and unveiled on June 6, 1913, in commemoration of 100 years peace between Canada and the United States. Stoney Creek is the birthplace of the world wide Women's Institute. It was here in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, on February I9, 1897, that the very first Women's Institute was organized through the combined efforts of Mr. Erland Lee and Adelaide Hoodless. It constitutes a world wide affiliated organization of women, at pres. ent- numbering six and one-half million members. Great credit is due to the ability, wisdom, and vision of those pioneer institute women, who chose as their motto, "For Home and Country". The "Mother" Institute in Stoney Creek is still functioning with its chietc objective ~-- to assist its members with the everyday problems in home managemean family health, social and community life, in order that they may be better citizens in a rapidly changing world.
