Miss Smith, of the Outward Bound School, Es- kdale, gave a very interesting talk and slide show of life among the Eskimos and Indians in Labr- competition, judged by Dr Sim- pson, for the three most useful ar- ticles in a first aid box was won by- Mrs Hinde. Miss Greggain's prize was won by Mrs Adams. Mrs Bibby's half-hour prize was won by Mrs Monkhouse. The hostesses were Mrs Currie and Mrs Fearon. RAVENGLASS The golden jubilee of Raven- glass W.I. was held on February 14. The silver jubilee of their president, Mrs D. Hartley, was also celebrated. Mrs E. Wilson, a founder member, made the horse- show style birthday cake, beau- tifully designed in the institute's colours. In a short speech, she presented Mrs Hartley with a small clock on behalf of the mem- bers. Mrs Gallantry, who gave Mrs Hartley a Valentine card ador, where she spent some time/ Signed by all the members and nursing the sick. Miss Smith was thanked by Mrs Hodgson, Hyce- moor Way. The competition win- ners were: Mrs Lowthian, Mrs Walker and Mrs Titherington. Supper hostesses were: Mrs Kitchin, Mrs Irving, and Mrs Hogg, with Mrs Hudson as speaker's hostess. WOODEND AND DISTRICT Presiding at the February mee- guests present, thanked Mrs Wilson. In reply, the president welcomed Mrs Mary Cottam, W.I. County Chairman, presidents from other institutes and mem- bers and guests and thanked ev- eryone who had helped to make this a memorable occasion. Mrs E. Thornton, secretary, read the minutes of the first meeting of February 15, 1923, and Mrs M. Farren, treasurer, read the first financial statement. It was inter- nagdebBamemmewmhfifigflg to hear that only three at Croft End, Mrs Adams asked for a silent tribute to Miss White- head. Members were asked to take gifts for the produce stall to Mrs Huddleston in time for the spring show on March 10. Mr and Mrs Stainton gave a slide show (set to music) which consisted of some very unusual and beautiful scenes taken of the coast line be- tween St. Bees and Fleswick bay. They were thanked by Mrs Minnie Hodgson. The competition for a posy of flowers from the garden was won by Mrs K. Herbert with Mrs P. Simpson second. Mrs Hetherington won the special prize. Tea was served by Mrs E. Graham, and helpers. The com- petition for the March meeting is to be a small piece of brass. ENNERDALE AND KINNISIDE Mrs Monkhouse presided over the February meeting of the En- nerdale and Kinniside W.I., presmmmlfirfim over the 50 years, the first being Lady Hutchinson, with Lady Ram- sden and Mrs Llewellyn as vice- presidents. Mrs Llewellyn later became president. After a meal prepared by the committee, Mrs Cottam proposed the toast to the W.I. The evening's entertainment came from the Millom Mixed Voice choir, with Mr Frank Cray- ston conducting, and Mrs Betty Newton accompanying on the piano. Delightful excerpts from "Merrie England" and "The Quaker Girl" were much ap- preciated. Mrs M. Farrish, Esk group convenor, thanked the in- stitute on behalf of the guests. FRIZIN GTON At the February meeting of Fri- zington W.I., Mrs Smith presided. Members were allowed to bring a friend, and the hall was full. Members stood in memory of Mrs where membem--pmsuentuim-,-fil. Polley' a founder member who ute to the memory of one of the members, Mrs Pattinson. Voting for the consultative committee took place. Thanks were ex- pressed from the Friends of Gar- lands for kindness during the year. Helpers are wanted for the Meals on Wheels Service. There will be a social evening in W.I. House on March 29. An invitation from Lamplugh W.I. was received for the fashion show on April 10. Mrs Monkhouse welcomed Dr Simpson, who gave a very inter- eting talk on his work in Uganda as a general physician. He gave a very good description of how people lived in the country and he was thanked by Mrs Bott. The hallwac'téd" 'as'tré'asurerrfor 19 years, and in sympathy with Mrs Massey, Mrs Laidlaw, Mrs J. Polley, Mrs Corkhill and Mrs Laws. Members were asked to send entries for the competitions in the spring showto be held in the Derwent School, Ct-ckermouth, on EBe "-- ggseautiful in CARE OF AGED Dr J. Kaminski, consultant ge- I g ti? ' e . a .1. riatrician at the West Cumber- land Hospital, gave members of Whitehaven Rotary Club a talk en- titled "Medical care of the aged" at the weekly luncheon last week at the Chase Hotel. He was thanked by Mr A. Dodd. March 10. These will be taken to the show by Mr W. Jackson. Gifts for the various stalls were also asked for, and members wishing to attend were asked to give their names. The A.G.M. will be held on June 6 in London, and Ennerdale, the link W.I., will send the dele- gate. Members were asked to help with the Meals on Wheels Service. A drama festival will be held at Wyndham School, Egremont, in April, and a produce guild area meeting will be held on March 22 in Whitehaven College. After the business, Mr Baxter Shaw and his concert party were introduced by the president. They gave a most varied programme of solos and items by the choir, some of which were sung unaccompanied. The whole programme was greatly en- joyed by the audience. They were thanked by Mrs F. Wilkinson. The competition for a wine glass was won by Mrs J. Atkinson with Mrs S. Seeds second, and Mrs M. Smith kindly gave a bulb bowl and shopping basket which were won by Mrs M. Kervin and Mrs D. Briggs. The concert party were entertained to supper by the com- mittee. The hostesses were Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs Briggs, Mrs Tutty, Mrs Temple and Mrs Sewell. WABERTHWAITE AND . #4301le M's.» The February meeting of Wa- berthwaite and Corney W.I. was chaired by Mrs Strong. Members were given details of the spring- show at Cockermouth on March 10, for which transport is being arranged, and the produce area meeting-at Ravenglass on March 29. The main part of the evening was given to a talk on plants by Mr W. B. Postlethwaite and Mr G. Rayson. It was a very interesting evening, with some useful information gained, in- cluding advice on growing cut- tings, how to get better soft fruit, and how to tackle roses. The two speakers were thanked by Mrs M. Jackson. The competition for the best pot plant was won by Mrs M. Stewart; 2, Mrs M. Preston; 3, Mrs M. New. The next meeting on March 15 includes a talk by Mrs Longley on Social Services. The competition is for the greatest .number of articles on a one-inch ' safety pin.
