Fleming tore it down and used the material to construct a manse for their minister. (presently the lildon and lilsie Willard residence). : My father approached the Neilson family re the building ofthe dock there and they put a price tag of $3500 on it which when he approached the government they refused to pay saying that their estimates for the construction of the wharf did not include purchase ofa site which was the responsibility of the Township to provide. Thus the construction of the very inadequate facility which has undergone so many additions down through the years (a story in itself) and in spite ofits additions out farther in the bay. Yesterday was the result of the decision that our present unusually low water levels, could not accommodate the satisfactoxy docking of the Amherst Islander. I often visualize what would have happened had the dock been built on the site of the Polley Wharf. The narrow McDonald lane could never have accommodated the line-ups of vehicles ' which we witness in the forty-foot right up to and into the Main Street ofStella when the Amherst Islander IS in servnce. This is a very long article, but as I said in the opening ' paragraph, I could not resist writing it after what happened in the last 24 hours. Perhaps Alfred Willard was right, the present site should never have been chosen, although we have yet to experience ice damage when the ice from Scott's Harbour and Kerr's Harbour is breaking up in the spring. BRUCE CAUGHEY SR. HONOURED Bruce Caughey Sr. has been selected for induction into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. The I ceremony is scheduled for 13 June, 1999 at the Hall of Fame at the Ontario Farm Museum in Milton (just west of: Mississauga beside the 401). Bruce! was nominated by the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association, citing the significance of his involvement in the farm mutual insurance industry, as well as his lifelong dedication to all areas of service to his community. Although he has been hospitalized since February, he still has high hopes that he can regain the strength to make the journey that day. Our best wishes and congratulations are extended to him. Amherst Islanders are very proud to have one oftheir own so highly honoured.
