I)! searchable pdfa Maxville woman 1 00 years old at Manor by Velma Franklin ‘ MAXVILLE-There was a big and festive gathering in the auditorium ofthe Maxville Manor last Wednesday. February 1, when relatives, friends and fellow residents came to pay their respects to Mrs. Mabel Barrett Stewart on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Noble Villeneuve. MPP. came to present the Vplaque with greetings from the Province of Ontario. and there was a telegram of congratulations from Lt, Govt John B. Aird. Reeve George Currier present ed Mrs. Stewart with a handsome clock from the Village of Max- ville. Since she is an honorary president of the WMS. Mrs. Moira MacGregor of Williams- town presented her with a put of . tulips on behalf of the Glengarry Prcsbyterial WMS, Western Div ision. Former administrator Allan Vallance was also present to bring his good wishes. Several members of her im- mediate family were able to be with Mrs. Stewart on this happy occasion-her nephew Hugh Fisher and wife Doris of Athul, her niece Dora Steel and husband Melville of Cassburn, and her great-grandniecc Sandra Allan Kirkey of Vankleek Hill. Her 07 sister Mrs. Myrtle Fisher of Maxville, had unfortunately suf- fered a fall and recuperating in hospital, was I unable to be present. Dun Munroe read Mrs. Stewart's biography to the inter- ested audience. ‘mauwwt was born near Fournier, on the north bank of the Nation River on February I, 1884. the daughter of John Barrett and Jane Nicholson. In the early 1900’s her family moved to the farm now owned by Stewart Arkinstall. She taught school in Caledonia for a couple of years. and in Skye near Dunvegan [or three years. travelling the four miles by horseback in those days. In 1909 she married Alex Danny Stewart. and lived on a farm near Dunvegan at Stewarts' Glen. While there she attended Kenyon Presbyterian Church. In 1918 Mrs. Stewart and her husband moved to Maxville. where he began an insurance business, They lived in the house now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. John A Urquhart on Fair St., and attend- ed St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. In 1926 Mrs. Stewart was made a Life Member of the Maxvillc WMS, and she also served as president of the Glen- garry Presbyterial WMS. Her husband died on December 23, 1955.
