HISTORY OF SOLHAY BEAECH submitted by: Mrs. Gordon Inglis On Wednesday, May 30, 1951, the Solway Institute was organized at the home of Mrs. Bert Caslick. Mrs. J. J. McKinnon, District President of Bruce East presided at the meeting and outlined the work of the Institute and the duties of the executive. Those present at this first meeting were: Mrs. Hmlter Ernest, Mrs. Harry Lindenschmidt, Mrs. Bert Caslick, Mrs. Hh. Whhenkel, Hrs. Hugh Bell, Mrs. Robt. Richardson and Mrs. Gordon Inglis. During the first eleven years we have given much in clothing and money to the following organizations: The Greek Fund, Hildmay Fair, Valkerton Christmas Fair, Unitarian Relief, Children's Aid Society, Korean Relief, European Flood Relief, TV set for Bruce Co. Home Fund, Bruce County Museum Fund, Care of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, Hungarian Relief, Gifts for War Veteran, donations to Bruce Co. Hospital, Tely Milk Ship, World Refugee Committee, Adelaide Hoodless fund, J. M. Game Memorial Fund, Unesco Jamaican relief, Bruce Co. Safety Fund, F.W.I.0. Foundation Fund, Foster Parent Plan and the Scholarship Fund. A number of trips and tours have been enjoyed by our members. Bus trips have been taken to Hamilton, Kitchener, Toronto; and some of our members attended the Shakespearean Festival at Stratford with members of the Walkertun Evening Institute. He have toured the National Carbon factory in Walkerton and Knechtel's Furniture factory in Hanover. On April 13, 1955, at A regular meeting held in Baird's School, a Life Membership Certificate was presented to Mrs. Wm. Morgan, by the Solway Institute. Presenting the award were Mrs. Graham Holm and Mrs. Carl Litt. On February 14, 1957, at a meeting at the home of Mrs. Carl Litt, we celebrated the 00th anniversary of the Women's Institute. A special birthday cake was enjoyed to mark the occasion and Mrs. Wm. Morgan gave amusing incidents of the early days of the Institute. 55.5115
