Salem-Nileslown W.|t In April l998 and September 1998 we had as program, a video which had been locally ï¬lmed of Scottish immigrants coming to Canada in the late I700's and early [8005. They landed in the area of Port Stanley and Port Glasgow. They had spent 6 weeks crossing the Atlantic bringing their own food with them. Most of their time was spent below deck as the ocean was very rough for small sailing vesselst Landing at either Quebec City or Montreal they walked to Lake Ontario, sailed west. then walked overland to Lake Erie and sailed to their destination, Their land grants were obtained from the Canada Company or Col. Talbot. By 1818 there were 36 families clearing the land and building log homes. Many Fergusons‘ Campbells, McGregors, McPhails, Mclntyres and Duncans had come. One family had brought a horse with them. One of our members, her husband and grandson participated in the ï¬lm. This ï¬lm was spread over two meetings because of its length.
