John Buchan, a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. 111 1888 they moved to Glasgow, where he went to Grammar School. The first year he won a scholarship which was sufficient to cover his fees. From then 011 he won scholarship after scholarship here and at University. He attended Glasgow and Oxford Universities. While at Oxford he wrote to his mother every morning. His writing brought recognition from the start. He wrote fast and well. He wrote fifty-five books. He loved the great out doors and walked much and read much. 111 1900, Lord Tweedsmuir studies law. He became secretary to the High Commissioner to South Africa returning he practiced law then went into publishing. Then he was War Correspondent in the First World War, received a commission in the Intelligence Corps and then was director of Information under Mr. Lloyd George. He was In bad health for a time, but became Deputy Chairman of Reuters News. Then he became a member of Parliament. 111 1933 and 1934, he was Lord High Commissioner for the Church of Scotland General assembly. During these two weeks he resided in Holyrood Palace, Oxford gave him her highest honour, Doctor of Civil Law. Lord Tweedsmuir Was made Governor General of Canada and raised to the peerage. He received many, many honours and wrote much and traveled all over Canada. Lord Tweedsmuir died at Montreal, February 11, 1940. The funeral was from Ottawa. 1n Lord Tweedsmuir library there were 5000 pieces which were presented to Queen's University. The collecting of historical information by the WI. pays tribute to Lord Tweedsmuir for this work that was dear to his heart, LADY TWEEDSMUlR Lady Tweedsmuir was Susan Charlotte Grosvener, born in London, England, a descendent of a sister of the Duke of Wellington. She married John Buchan on July IS, 1907, She was attended by eight bridesmaids. They had four children, Alice, their first child, John born in 1911, William born in 19 | 6 and Alastair In 1918. As wife of the Governor General, she entertained President Roosevelt, the first time an American President ever visited a Governor General in Canada. They entertained King George VI and Queen Mary in 1939. Lady Tweedsmuir was greatly interested in WI. She was President of the Elsï¬eld WI. Oxfordshire, in England for 15 years, and was county President in Oxfordshire when they were posted to Canada where she attended branch meetings and conventions and gave to WI groups addresses. She was made Hon. President of the F.W.l.0. and later Hon. Life Member. She advised the W1. to keep its money for its own work rather than to help other organizations, to promote peace in the world by having peace in our own hearts, homes and communities. It was she who suggested that the branches compile Community Histories now called Tweedsmuir Histories. Lady Tweedsmuir wrote several books and plays and she instituted the Lady Tweedsmuir Rural Library Scheme in 1936 in which 25,000 books were collected and are circulated among remote sections of the Western provinces. Queen Mary donated one hundred. In 1945 Lady Tweedsmuir presented three silver cups at National level for biennial competitions for the Best Tweedsmuir History, a cultural Project and a Handicraft Project.
